Why Is My Ottoman Bed Hard to Lift? Mattress Weight and Other Checks
An ottoman bed can feel hard to lift because the mattress is too heavy for its mechanism, something is catching, the frame is misaligned, or the gas struts are no longer providing enough assistance. A little effort at the start of the lift can be normal; a sudden change, uneven movement or a platform that will not stay raised needs attention.
Start by identifying what changed. Do not keep pulling harder to overcome a problem you cannot see.
Notice when the lifting became difficult
The timing helps narrow down the checks:
- Since changing the mattress: check its actual weight against the bed’s approved range.
- Since assembly: check the instructions, fittings and frame alignment.
- Since moving the bed: check that it stands level and has enough opening clearance.
- Gradually, with the same mattress: arrange an inspection of the lifting mechanism.
- Only at one point in the movement: look for something catching.
These are clues, not a diagnosis. Stop operating the bed if the platform twists, drops or makes a new grinding sound.
Check mattress weight, not just mattress size
A mattress can fit the platform perfectly and still be unsuitable for the lifting mechanism. Two king-size mattresses can weigh quite differently, so matching the dimensions does not establish compatibility.
Find the mattress’s net weight in its specifications or ask the retailer. Then check the permitted mattress-weight range for your exact bed model, size and lift configuration. Do not confuse this with the bed’s sleeping-weight capacity or the storage compartment’s load limit.
There is no single maximum mattress weight that applies to every ottoman bed.
The Rimni Ottoman Bed has a platform-top base with gas-lift arms, and its mattress is purchased separately. Before pairing it with a mattress, ask Top Beds to confirm the acceptable weight for your chosen version; the product description does not publish that limit.
Remove loose bedding and other items from the top before operating the lift, following your bed’s instructions. A heavy topper also contributes to the load, so mention it when checking compatibility.
Do not remove the mattress and operate the empty platform as a shortcut test. Many mechanisms rely on mattress weight for controlled movement.
Lift from the intended position
Use the supplied lifting handle or strap at the position shown in the instructions. Pulling an upholstered corner, slat or mattress edge can put uneven force through the frame.
An end-lift bed opens from the foot, while a side-lift version needs access along its opening side. The Montreal Ottoman Bed Frame offers both configurations. Choosing between them should include checking where you can stand comfortably to operate the bed.
Move a nearby stool or laundry basket if it makes you reach awkwardly. Use a steady movement without jerking, and keep fingers away from hinges.
Gas assistance reduces the effort required; it does not mean every bed will rise without any help. However, you should not need to strain or twist your body to force it open.
Look for anything blocking the movement
A trapped duvet edge, displaced mattress or storage bag near the hinge can make the platform feel unusually stiff. Check the visible edges first, with the bed closed.
Where the platform opens normally and remains securely supported, inspect the storage space according to the manual. Fully open it and engage any supplied safety support before accessing the compartment. Never crawl underneath a raised platform or reach through its lifting mechanism.
Items should sit below the moving base and clear of the hinges. Storage beneath the platform usually stays in place when the bed opens, so its contents are not normally part of the lifted load. Nevertheless, overfilled storage can obstruct movement or damage the compartment.
If the bed will not open safely, leave the obstruction for an appropriate technician to investigate.
Check assembly and alignment on a new bed
A newly assembled ottoman may have initial resistance, particularly when first lowering an extended mechanism. That does not explain every bed that refuses to lift.

Check the assembly guide for the correct bracket positions, gas-strut orientation and any transport restraints that must be removed. Remove only items the instructions identify as packaging or restraints.
With the bed closed, look for uneven gaps around the platform or signs that one side is rubbing. Check whether all feet sit securely on the floor. A base partly resting on a thick rug may need repositioning.
Do not loosen hinge fittings or disconnect struts to make the platform move. If assembly is incomplete, parts appear incorrect, or the frame catches, ask the installer or Top Beds to check it before further use.
Recognise when the gas struts need attention
If the same mattress has become harder to lift over time, reduced assistance from the gas struts is one possibility. A platform that begins descending unexpectedly is a stronger reason to stop using the storage function.
Visible damage to a strut, bent brackets or unequal movement also requires inspection. Do not hold the lid up with your shoulder, a broom handle or an improvised prop while searching underneath.
Gas struts are pressurised components. Do not open, puncture or try to repair them. Avoid spraying oil onto their rods; sealed gas springs generally do not need external lubrication.
Replacement parts must match the mechanism’s specification. Buying stronger struts without approval can create a different problem, including difficult closing. Ask for the correct parts and fitting procedure for your particular bed.
Give Top Beds the details needed to help
When you contact Top Beds, include your order number, bed size, lift direction, mattress model and mattress weight. Explain whether the problem started after delivery, a mattress change or moving the bed.
Photographs of the closed bed and safely visible fittings can help. Do not reproduce an unsafe movement just to film it.
If you are considering another model from the ottoman beds collection, confirm mattress compatibility and opening access before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
Can a mattress be too light for an ottoman bed?
Yes. Some mechanisms specify a minimum mattress weight as well as a maximum. Too little weight can make the platform difficult to close or cause it to rise unexpectedly.
Is a memory foam mattress too heavy for an ottoman?
Not automatically. Weight varies between models and sizes. Compare the actual mattress weight with the approved range for your bed rather than judging compatibility by its filling.
Should a new ottoman bed feel stiff?
Some initial resistance can occur. Follow the model’s first-use instructions with the mattress fitted, but stop if the frame jams, twists or requires excessive force.
Why does only one side lift?
Possible causes include an obstruction, misalignment or a problem with a lifting component. Stop pulling and arrange an inspection; forcing the other side can damage the frame.
Can I replace just one gas strut?
Ask the supplier whether replacement should be individual or as a matched pair. The correct approach depends on the mechanism and the condition of both struts.
Make the next lift predictable
Start with mattress compatibility, then check lifting position, clearances and assembly. A changing or unstable lift deserves inspection before further use.
